International Aviation Law
A foundation course examining international civil aviation law, airspace sovereignty, aircraft nationality, aviation safety and security, international air transport and State responsibilities.

Module 1 — Foundations of International Aviation Law
Students examine the principal sources of international aviation law, including treaties, customary international law, national legislation and international standards. Particular attention is given to the Convention on International Civil Aviation and the role of the International Civil Aviation Organization.
Module 2 — Airspace Sovereignty and Jurisdiction
Students examine the principle of State sovereignty over the airspace above its territory and the legal consequences of that principle. The course distinguishes national airspace from areas beyond national sovereignty and introduces rules governing international navigation.
Module 3 — Aircraft Nationality and Registration
Students learn the legal significance of aircraft registration and nationality. The course examines the relationship between an aircraft and its State of registration and introduces the responsibilities associated with aircraft nationality.
Module 4 — International Air Transport
Students examine the legal framework governing international air services, including operating permissions, routes, traffic rights and cooperation between States. The course emphasises that international air transport is subject to treaty arrangements and applicable national regulation.
Module 5 — Aviation Safety and Security
Students examine international standards concerning aviation safety, aircraft operations, licensing, oversight and accident prevention. The course also introduces aviation-security obligations designed to protect civil aviation from unlawful interference.
Module 6 — Aviation Liability and International Cooperation
Students are introduced to international principles governing liability arising from aviation activities and to the importance of cooperation between States. The course considers passenger, cargo and third-party issues at a foundational level.
