International Constitutional Law
A foundation course examining constitutional structures, separation of powers, judicial independence, fundamental rights, constitutional review and the relationship between domestic constitutional systems and international law.

Module 1 — Foundations of Constitutional Law
Students are introduced to constitutions as foundational legal frameworks governing public institutions, powers, rights and procedures. The course compares different constitutional traditions without assuming that one model applies universally.
Module 2 — Separation of Powers
Students examine the distribution of public authority among legislative, executive and judicial institutions. The course considers checks and balances and why concentration of public power may require legal safeguards.
Module 3 — Judicial Independence and Constitutional Courts
Students learn the importance of judicial independence, impartiality and institutional safeguards. The course introduces constitutional courts and other judicial bodies that may review the legality or constitutionality of public action.
Module 4 — Fundamental Rights and Constitutional Guarantees
Students examine how constitutions may protect fundamental rights and liberties and how limitations on rights can be assessed under the applicable constitutional framework. The course emphasises legality, proportionality where applicable and effective remedies.
Module 5 — Constitutional Review and Interpretation
Students are introduced to constitutional interpretation and judicial review. The course examines how courts may assess legislation or executive action against constitutional requirements while recognising that different legal systems use different methods.
Module 6 — Constitutions and International Law
Students examine the relationship between domestic constitutional law and international legal obligations. The course emphasises that the effect of international law within a domestic legal order depends on the constitution, legislation and applicable legal rules of that State.
