International Environmental Governance

Module 1 — Foundations of International Environmental Governance

Students are introduced to the institutions, treaties and principles through which States cooperate on international environmental protection. The course examines why environmental problems often require coordinated international responses.

Module 2 — Environmental Treaties and Institutions

Students examine the role of multilateral environmental agreements, international organisations, conferences of States parties and other institutional mechanisms. The course explains how international environmental commitments are developed and implemented.

Module 3 — Core Environmental Principles

Students are introduced to principles commonly associated with international environmental law and governance, including prevention, precaution, sustainable development, cooperation and the polluter-pays approach where applicable.

Module 4 — Transboundary Environmental Harm

Students examine legal and cooperative responses to environmental harm that crosses national borders. The course considers notification, consultation, information sharing and the duty to cooperate in addressing significant environmental risks.

Module 5 — Compliance and Implementation

Students examine how international environmental agreements are implemented and how compliance may be encouraged through reporting, monitoring, review procedures, technical assistance and institutional cooperation.

Module 6 — Dispute Resolution and Global Environmental Cooperation

Students examine peaceful methods of resolving environmental disputes and the importance of international cooperation in addressing global challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution and protection of shared resources.
