Module 1 — Foundations of Evidence Law

Students are introduced to the role of evidence in legal proceedings and the distinction between allegations, information and established facts. The course emphasises that evidentiary rules depend on the applicable court, treaty, statute and procedural framework.

Module 2 — Relevance and Admissibility

Students examine the basic concepts of relevance and admissibility and learn why potentially useful material may still be subject to procedural limitations. The course stresses careful application of the rules governing the particular proceeding.

Module 3 — Authenticity, Reliability and Corroboration

Students learn how evidence may be assessed for authenticity, reliability and consistency. The course introduces corroboration and explains why the existence of supporting material can affect the weight given to evidence.

Module 4 — Documentary and Digital Evidence

Students examine documentary and electronic material, including records, communications, photographs, recordings and other digital information. The course emphasises preservation, provenance, authenticity and appropriate handling of digital material.

Module 5 — Witness and Expert Evidence

Students learn the basic principles concerning witness testimony and expert evidence. The course examines credibility, competence, independence, expertise and the importance of allowing evidence to be properly tested.

Module 6 — Evidence Handling and Judicial Assessment

Students examine preservation, chain of custody, disclosure and judicial evaluation of evidence. The course emphasises reasoned assessment, protection of sensitive material and the distinction between the existence of evidence and the weight ultimately given to it.
