Module 1 — Principles of International Legal Drafting
Students examine precision, clarity, consistency, defined terms, structure and legal effect when drafting international legal instruments and formal agreements.
Module 2 — Drafting Treaty Provisions and Obligations
Students analyse the drafting of rights, obligations, prohibitions, permissions and implementation clauses while considering how wording can affect interpretation and legal effect.
Module 3 — Definitions, Scope and Institutional Clauses
Students examine definitions, scope provisions, institutional structures, powers, responsibilities and procedural clauses used in international legal instruments.
Module 4 — Exceptions, Conditions and Safeguards
Students analyse carefully drafted exceptions, limitations, conditions, safeguards and qualification clauses, including the importance of avoiding ambiguity and unintended consequences.
Module 5 — Interpretation, Consistency and Legal Effect
Students examine how drafting choices influence interpretation, consistency between provisions, interaction with existing legal instruments and the practical operation of international agreements.
Module 6 — Advanced Review and Drafting Quality Control
Students apply structured review methods to identify ambiguity, contradictions, undefined concepts, inconsistent terminology and other drafting weaknesses before an instrument is finalised.
