The United Nations Charter establishes the principle that States should seek peaceful methods when resolving disputes. These methods include negotiation, mediation, arbitration, judicial settlement and other diplomatic processes.
Negotiation is one of the most common methods of resolving international disputes. States communicate directly to reach agreements and find solutions without involving external decision-makers.
Mediation and conciliation involve assistance from a third party who helps disputing parties communicate and develop possible solutions. These methods are generally based on cooperation and consent.
International arbitration allows States to submit disputes to an agreed tribunal. The parties usually determine the procedure and accept the decision according to the terms of their agreement.
International courts and tribunals provide judicial methods of resolving disputes. Their authority depends on their founding legal instruments and the consent or acceptance of States involved.
The International Court of Justice is the principal judicial organ of the United Nations. It resolves legal disputes between States and provides advisory opinions on legal questions referred by authorised bodies.
