This is a pathway skeleton. The role courses identified below are the planned course structure to build when this pathway is developed. They do not mean that the courses, lessons or assessments have already been built.

STAGE 1 · FOUNDATION

International Law and Court Legal Foundation

Required legal foundation. Required Court legal and procedural knowledge remains distinct from language and professional interpretation training.

STAGE 2 · ACADEMY

Foundation Academy

Foundation Academy learning teaches how the Court works and provides the common Court foundation.

STAGE 3 · PRACTICAL DEVELOPMENT

Interpreter & Translation Experience Development

Candidates may develop professional language and Court interpretation experience alongside education and training. Language proficiency alone does not authorise Court interpretation.

  4. Simultaneous interpretation practice
  5. Translation and terminology management
  6. Progressive responsibility as competence is demonstrated

Relevant experience may be developed alongside education and training. Participation in training or supervised Court work does not itself confer appointment, authorisation or legal authority.

Practical Interpreter Training

STAGE 6 · COURT ASSESSMENT

Court Competency

Determine whether an interpreter candidate has demonstrated the practical and professional competency required for Court-authorised language service.

Written Examination

Assess Court procedure, terminology and interpreter duties.

Legal Terminology Exercise

Assess accurate and context-appropriate legal terminology.

Hearing Interpretation Simulation

Assess consecutive or simultaneous interpretation in realistic Court conditions.

Court Translation Exercise

Assess accurate and faithful translation of Court material.

Oral Assessment

Assess language competence, ethics, confidentiality, neutrality and professional judgement.

Boundary: Completion of Academy courses or practical training does not itself establish language certification, Court competency or appointment as an interpreter.

Outcome: Court competency or authorisation determination recorded separately from Academy course results.

STAGE 7 · COURT SERVICE

Supervised Service

Provide supervised or Court-authorised interpretation and translation service after the applicable professional and Court requirements have been satisfied.

  1. applicable language/professional competency completed separately
  2. Court competency or authorisation completed separately where required
  3. formal Court appointment or registration where required
  4. supervised participation in Court work where required
  5. documented performance and quality review
  6. completion of any supervision or service requirements established by the Court

Service boundary: Court language service is not an Academy course and does not begin solely because Academy courses have been completed.

IMPORTANT PATHWAY BOUNDARY

Learning is not appointment

Completion of International Law study, Foundation Academy learning, future role courses or practical training does not itself establish Court competency, appointment, authorisation or legal authority. Those matters remain governed by the applicable Treaty, Court Rules and separate Court procedures.
